A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck 43 km south of Jurm in the Badakhshan province of northeastern Afghanistan at 6:04 p.m. local time on June 27, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The epicenter was located at 36.473 degrees north latitude and 70.764 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 199 km.
Strong tremors were felt in various locations, including the Afghan capital of Kabul, where AFP reported that a large crack appeared on the interior wall of a building.
In the Swat region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northern Pakistan, which borders the earthquake-stricken area to the east, residents terrified by the strong shaking rushed out of their homes.
Daniyal Ahmad, a local resident, told Reuters, "The tremors here in Swat were very strong and lasted for quite a while. People ran out of their houses, and women and children were seen crying in fear."
Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa told the AP that there have been no reports of casualties or specific damages as of now.
