The national football team's hopes of advancing to the Round of 32 in the North and Central American World Cup are becoming increasingly slim. With Senegal and Iran finishing their group stages with better records than ours among the 12 third-placed teams, the team led by Hong Myung-bo has been pushed to the brink.
Reporter Yoo Byung-min has the story.

The trouble began early this morning (June 27) with the Group I third-place decider between Senegal and Iraq.
We needed the two teams to draw, or for Senegal to win by one goal, or for Iraq to win by four goals or fewer. However, Senegal dominated the match, crushing Iraq 5-0.
In this tournament, the top eight teams among the 12 third-placed finishers advance to the Round of 32. While Senegal finished with the same record as us—one win and two losses for three points—they moved ahead of us in goal difference, placing them 5th among the third-placed teams.
Consequently, Hong Myung-bo's side dropped from 6th to 7th place.
In the subsequent final match of Group H, Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0 with a winning goal from Baena in the 42nd minute of the first half, fulfilling one of the conditions for our team to advance to the Round of 32.
Uruguay, the third-placed team in Group H, finished with two draws and one loss, leaving them with two points—behind our three points.
Maintaining 7th place among the 12 third-placed teams, our national team kept its hopes for the Round of 32 alive by staying ahead of Scotland and Uruguay.
However, the relief was short-lived.
In the final match of Group G that concluded a short while ago, Egypt and Iran drew 1-1. Iran finished 3rd in their group with three draws; while they are tied with us on three points, they hold an advantage due to a better goal difference.
Now sitting in 8th place among the 12 third-placed teams, our national team must finish ahead of at least two other third-placed teams in the final matches of Groups J, K, and L, which take place tomorrow, to secure a spot in the Round of 32.
