▲ Lee Hak-young named Chair of the Democratic Party Convention Preparatory Committee
The Democratic Party of Korea decided today (June 26) to appoint four-term lawmaker Lee Hak-young as the chair of the preparatory committee for the August 17 national convention, where the party's next leadership will be elected.
Chief Spokesperson Kang Jun-hyeon told reporters after a closed-door Supreme Council meeting that the council had approved the motion to be submitted to the Party Affairs Committee.
Three-term lawmaker So Byeong-hoon will serve as the chair of the Election Management Committee.
The appointment of the committee chair will be finalized through a resolution by the Party Affairs Committee scheduled for early next week.
During the meeting, the Supreme Council also approved the appointment of three-term lawmaker Yoo Dong-soo, former senior vice chair of the Policy Committee, as the new secretary-general.
The secretary-general position had been vacant since June 24, when Secretary-General Cho Seung-rae resigned alongside former representative Jung Chung-rae, who stepped down from his post ahead of the national convention.
Regarding the term of the new secretary-general, Chief Spokesperson Kang explained, "Newly appointed political party officials are set to serve only until the national convention."
