President Lee Jae-myung is scheduled to meet with Takeda Ryota, Chairman of the Japan-Korea Parliamentarians' Union, today (June 26) to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between South Korea and Japan.
President Lee will meet with Chairman Takeda, who leads the non-partisan group of pro-Korea Japanese lawmakers, at the Blue House this afternoon.
Chairman Takeda is an eight-term lawmaker who previously served as Japan's Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications and was appointed chairman of the union this past March.
The Japan-Korea Parliamentarians' Union was established in 1975, shortly after the normalization of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Japan, alongside the Korea-Japan Parliamentarians' Union.
It is reported that more than 200 members of Japan's House of Representatives and House of Councillors are currently active in the union.
During the meeting, President Lee is expected to engage in a broad exchange of views on setting a direction for further deepening the relationship between the two countries—which have built trust through the restoration of shuttle diplomacy—as well as the roles of both nations in ensuring stability in Northeast Asia.
