A man who assaulted two U.S. soldiers in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, was falsely identified as a Korean national abroad, a claim that has been proven entirely untrue.
The spread of the incident via social media led to the rapid dissemination of this misinformation.
In the early hours of June 21, a U.S. national in his 30s assaulted two U.S. soldiers he did not know on a street in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province.
The released footage shows the assailant not only kicking and punching the victims but also threatening a woman who attempted to intervene.
Even after the victims had fallen to the ground, the man continued to engage in bizarre behavior, such as dancing on the street and pulling out a stack of 50,000-won bills in front of the responding police officers.
It is reported that during police questioning, the suspect, identified as A, stated that he became angry because the victims had ignored him and used profanity.
As the video circulated on international social media platforms, some foreign users mistakenly identified the perpetrator as a Korean vlogger and began criticizing him.
However, police investigation confirmed that the assailant is also a U.S. citizen.
The police have booked the man on charges of assault and are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.
