Police have launched an investigation after receiving a flood of complaints from victims who claim they were defrauded by a company that solicited investments under the pretense of selling eSIMs to foreigners visiting South Korea.
The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency's Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit announced on June 25 that it is investigating Company A, based in Incheon, on charges of fraud and violating the Act on Regulation of Similar Deposit-Taking Activities.
As of the morning of June 26, police had received 49 complaints from 132 victims and initiated an investigation.
The victims claimed, "Company A promoted a business selling eSIMs to foreigners and promised returns of over 10 percent on investments, but they have now cut off all contact."
The victims further explained that there are many more people who were defrauded by Company A in regions outside of Incheon, suggesting that the number of complainants is expected to increase significantly.
A police official stated, "We have designated the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency as the primary investigation unit and plan to transfer cases filed in other regions to Incheon," adding, "We intend to verify the allegations through investigations of the complainants."
