The United Nations is coordinating the deployment of personnel to provide search and rescue support following a series of powerful earthquakes in Venezuela.

Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, stated in a statement on June 25 (local time) that the UN is "mobilizing all available resources to support the people of Venezuela in response to the deadly and devastating earthquakes that have struck the country."

"The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is coordinating the rapid deployment of urban search and rescue teams from across the international community through the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG)," Fletcher said. "We have also dispatched additional rapid response teams to reinforce our UN teams on the ground."

A series of powerful earthquakes, reaching a maximum magnitude of 7.5, struck near the Venezuelan capital of Caracas on June 24.

With at least 164 people confirmed dead and 971 injured so far, the death toll is expected to rise as search and rescue operations face delays due to extensive building collapses and damage to infrastructure.
