The Gyeongnam branch of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU) announced that it has submitted its first petition to the local police station regarding a case involving repeated child abuse allegations filed by a parent against a middle school teacher in Gimhae.
A total of 11,726 people, including Gyeongnam Branch Head Kim Ji-sung, as well as other teachers and citizens, participated in this petition.
The case began in July of last year when a parent, dissatisfied with the teacher's handling of school violence, filed a complaint against the teacher for child abuse.
In November of the same year, the prosecution cleared the teacher of the charges. Subsequent appeals and a judicial review application filed by the parent were all dismissed, confirming that the teacher's guidance of the students was legitimate.
However, the parent filed a second complaint in April of this year, adding some new details.
The KTU Gyeongnam branch strongly urged the police to promptly dismiss the case and rule it as having no charges, stating, "This is a retaliatory lawsuit regarding a matter that has already been legally adjudicated."
The KTU plans to collect additional signatures until June 30 and submit a second petition.
Previously, SBS reported on a case where a physical education teacher at a middle school in Gimhae was sued for child abuse by a parent after performing squats with students in June of last year.
The parent claimed that the teacher committed child abuse by pulling a student's ear and forcing them to hold a "transparent chair" (wall sit) position, but investigative authorities cleared the teacher of all charges.
