Kim Ho-chul, Chairman of the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI), announced today (June 24) that the agency has begun collecting data for an accounting audit of the National Election Commission (NEC) following a resolution by the Audit Committee yesterday, in response to issues regarding the commission's poor election management.
During his first press conference since taking office, Chairman Kim stated that the public has significant interest and high concerns regarding the unacceptable infringement on voting rights, which prompted the decision.
Chairman Kim explained that the BAI expects to begin on-site inspections around July, once the scope and duration of the audit are determined through the data collection process and specific audit items are selected.
Regarding the specific areas of the audit, Chairman Kim stated that the agency will examine the use of election funds for non-designated purposes, inadequate settlement of election expenses, and the improper procurement of election equipment and supplies.
