The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced today that it secured a North Korean soldier who crossed the central frontline on the night of June 23.
"Relevant authorities are currently investigating the details of the incident," the JCS stated.
The soldier reportedly expressed a desire to defect.
This marks the fourth defection since the inauguration of the Lee Jae-myung administration and the second involving a North Korean soldier.
Previously, in October of last year, one North Korean soldier crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) on the central front and expressed an intention to defect; the military secured the individual and handed them over to relevant authorities.
In addition, one male civilian crossed the MDL on the mid-western front on July 3 of last year, and another male civilian was rescued south of the median line in the neutral waters of the Han River on July 31 of the same year.
