JTBC has categorically denied media reports suggesting that its World Cup broadcasts could be suspended due to unpaid broadcasting rights fees to FIFA, following the broadcaster's recent filing for court receivership.
In an official statement released today, June 24, JTBC announced, "We will continue to broadcast the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup without any disruptions through the final match."
The network added, "We plan to deliver the World Cup action vividly, covering not only the matches of the South Korean national team but also the remainder of the tournament. We ask that viewers not be misled by incorrect information."
On June 23, JNN, a media outlet affiliated with Japan's TBS, reported that "it has been confirmed that JTBC has yet to pay a portion of its broadcasting rights fees to FIFA," adding that "if the fees are not paid by the deadline, there is a possibility that broadcasts of the tournament matches, which begin on the 29th, could be suspended in South Korea," causing significant concern.
JTBC secured exclusive broadcasting rights for the Winter and Summer Olympics from 2026 to 2032, as well as the World Cup from 2026 to 2030. In April, the network finalized an agreement with KBS to co-broadcast the North and Central America World Cup, which is currently underway.
However, on June 12, JTBC faced a financial crisis after failing to repay 20.6 billion won in maturing securitized loans. Consequently, its parent company, JoongAng Holdings, along with Contentree JoongAng, JoongAng P&I, and Megabox JoongAng, filed for court receivership on June 14, followed by JTBC on June 15.
Amidst this severe management crisis, the rumors regarding unpaid broadcasting fees had heightened concerns among football fans. However, with JTBC promising normal coverage through the final, the network appears to be taking steps to quell the situation.
