[Anchor] Thousands of young, single men and women have flocked to an event in Yangyang, Gangwon Province. What kind of event is it?
It seems that Buddhist temples are establishing themselves as a new venue for meeting people, transcending their religious role.
More than 4,200 single men and women have applied for "I Am Solo," a temple stay program for singles scheduled to be held next month at Naksansa Temple in Yangyang, Gangwon Province.
This is the highest number of applicants since the program began in 2023.
With only 10 men and 10 women being selected, the competition rate has reached 165 to 1 for men and 257 to 1 for women.
"I Am Solo" is a matchmaking event open to anyone, regardless of their religion.
The program features various activities tailored to the preferences of the MZ generation, including couple yoga, blind dates, and "plogging" (jogging while picking up litter) dates.
The event has gained even more popularity as word has spread about its high success rate—with about 50% of participants forming couples each time—and actual marriages resulting from the program.
Following the surge in applications, the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism announced that it would hold an additional event for young people in the Seoul metropolitan area this coming August.
