At approximately 6:40 p.m. yesterday, June 22, a car driven by a person in their 70s, identified as A, suddenly reversed on an uphill road in Saha-gu, Busan, striking four vehicles, including a motorcycle and other cars.
A motorcyclist in their 20s was seriously injured in the accident and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Fortunately, it is reported that their injuries are not life-threatening.
Two other drivers involved in the collision sustained minor injuries.
It is reported that during the police investigation, A stated, "The engine suddenly shut off, and the braking system failed, causing the car to roll backward."
A police official stated, "We are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident based on the vehicle's dashcam footage and statements from the victims."
Traffic accidents involving elderly drivers have been occurring frequently of late.
On the afternoon of June 21, a car driven by a person in their 70s struck four pedestrians on a sidewalk on a road in Daeyeon-dong, Nam-gu, Busan.
This accident resulted in the deaths of a woman in her 40s and a woman in her 70s.
A woman in her 30s and a teenager, who is the daughter of the woman in her 40s, also sustained leg and head injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
According to the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency, the number of traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers has been rising annually, jumping from 1,834 cases in 2020 to 2,672 cases in 2024.
