Police are tracking two individuals who broke into a Busan Metro train depot and spray-painted graffiti on a train before fleeing the scene.
According to the Busan Transportation Corporation on Tuesday (June 23), the graffiti was discovered on one train at 4:38 a.m. during a pre-departure inspection at the Daejeo Depot in Gangseo-gu, Busan.
Upon reviewing CCTV footage, the corporation confirmed that two unidentified individuals climbed over a fence near the test track at 2:51 a.m. and fled the scene at 3:09 a.m., about 18 minutes later.
It is reported that the suspects hid between train cars to spray-paint the graffiti.
At the time of the incident, three night security guards were stationed at the main gate and the turnaround track.
The corporation believes the intruders took advantage of a gap in security patrols immediately after guards had checked that area.
Fortunately, there were no disruptions to train operations, including the first trains of the day.
"We reported the incident to the police immediately after discovery and have begun measures to prevent recurrence, such as inspecting depot security and strengthening patrols, particularly around the entry points," a corporation official said. "We will cooperate fully with the police investigation and plan to file a claim for damages once the total cost is assessed."
In September 2022, two foreign nationals used a similar method to break into the Sinpyeong and Hopo depots, leaving graffiti on the exterior of Line 1 and 2 trains.
At that time, one of the suspects was extradited to Korea from Romania following an Interpol Red Notice.
The corporation recovered 7.6 million won in damages, which included costs for repairing the barbed-wire fences, restoring the trains, and accounting for vehicle depreciation.
