U.S. President Donald Trump has introduced national support measures to accelerate the practical application of quantum computers.
According to reports from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and other outlets, President Trump signed two executive orders on June 22 (local time) aimed at promoting the development of advanced quantum computers and mitigating security threats posed by the new technology.
Through the first executive order, President Trump directed federal agencies, including the Department of Energy, to collaborate with the private sector and academia to deploy quantum computers for scientific research by 2028.
He also ordered the Department of Commerce and the Department of Defense to deploy quantum sensors capable of utilizing quantum mechanics to replace the Global Positioning System (GPS) within five years.
Quantum sensors can be used to operate weapons on battlefields where GPS jamming is prevalent.
A senior White House official predicted that these goals would serve as a stepping stone toward expanding quantum computing systems.
In the second executive order, President Trump instructed government agencies to prepare by 2031 for quantum systems capable of neutralizing standard encryption protocols.
The core objective is to strengthen security systems across both government and private sectors to prevent national infrastructure from being paralyzed by hackers utilizing quantum computing.
Rebecca Krauthamer, CEO of the security firm QuSecure, stated, "It is significant that they have set a deadline during a security transition period where this can no longer remain a theory."
Quantum computers can solve complex problems in specific fields at speeds incomparable to existing supercomputers.
Due to this potential for use in advanced industries, countries around the world are investing massive amounts of capital in a race to secure technological standards and ecosystems.
If the goals announced on this day are achieved, it is expected to be a groundbreaking milestone signaling that quantum technology is ready for practical use.
During the signing ceremony for the executive orders, President Trump said, "We will make an unprecedented level of investment in the leading position the United States holds in quantum computing."
These executive orders coincide with the U.S. Department of Commerce's provision of billions of dollars in funding to quantum companies.
The signing ceremony was attended by leaders of companies driving private investment in quantum computing, including IBM CEO Arvind Krishna and Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Google's parent company, Alphabet.
