Director Yeon Sang-ho's new film 'COLONY' debuted at No. 1 at the box office on its opening day.

According to the integrated computer network for movie theater tickets of the Korean Film Council on the morning of May 22, 'COLONY' drew 185,532 viewers nationwide on its opening day, May 21.

'COLONY' tells the story of isolated survivors inside a sealed building due to an unidentified outbreak, fighting against infected beings that evolve in unpredictable ways. The film is directed by Yeon Sang-ho and stars Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Shin Hyun-been, Ji Chang-wook, and Kim Shin-rok.

'COLONY', which had surpassed a 50% reservation rate and 200,000 ticket presales before its release, recorded a performance worthy of a highly anticipated film by drawing close to 200,000 viewers on its opening day. With a production cost of 17 billion KRW, the break-even point for 'COLONY' is 3 million viewers. The outlook for reaching the break-even point is expected to become clearer depending on the audience numbers over its first weekend.

With this, 'Michael', which had been leading the box office at No. 1 until the release of 'COLONY', dropped to second place. On this day, 'Michael' drew only 29,293 viewers. Its cumulative audience count stands at 807,720.
