Kim Kyung-nam is winning over living rooms as a villain you just can’t hate in "Phantom Lawyer".
In the SBS Fri-Sat drama "Phantom Lawyer" (written by Kim Ga-young and Kang Cheol-gyu, directed by Shin Joong-hoon), Yang Do-kyung (Kim Kyung-nam), the head of law firm Taebaek, is a cold-blooded attorney who will do anything to earn his father’s (Choi Kwang-il) approval. But in front of his crush Han Na-hyun (Esom), he shrinks down to an adorably timid version of himself ― a twist that’s charming viewers.
His offbeat crush antics are stealing scenes. He panics and tries to stop Han Na-hyun from jumping to a rival firm. He even insists a fender-bender was his fault to score points with her father (Lee Dae-yeon) ― moments that had fans laughing out loud.
That interest peaked with a pre-release clip dropped before the broadcast. When Han Na-hyun confesses to Shin I-rang (Yoo Yeon-seok), saying, “I like being with you,” Yang Do-kyung, watching from the sidelines, blurts out, “Then what about me?” ― unleashing a hilariously childish bout of jealousy.
Viewers are reacting with comments like, “He’s a villain, but I just can’t hate him,” and “Whenever Yang Do-kyung appears, the genre flips to a rom-com.” Many say Kim Kyung-nam’s performance ― toggling between a ruthlessly ambitious villain and a clumsy, lovesick puppy ― gives the character real dimension.
The production team shared, “Yang Do-kyung is fueled by desire and ambition. His pride runs deep. But he can’t hide his pure(?) feelings for Han Na-hyun,” adding, “His jealousy will become an unexpected variable in Shin I-rang and Han Na-hyun’s teamwork, so please stay tuned for what’s ahead.”
"Phantom Lawyer", which just kicked off its full-on love triangle, airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 p.m.
