Actor Bae Sung-woo expressed both regret and gratitude as his previously completed film finally heads to theaters after a long delay tied to his own wrongdoing.

At a press screening and Q&A for ‘The Ultimate Duo’ held at CGV Yongsan in Seoul on the afternoon of the 25th, Bae said, “I’m thankful just for the fact that this movie is getting released,” adding, “I hope it leaves viewers with an enjoyable experience.”

While he has appeared in OTT projects, this marks his first theatrical release since the controversy. “I didn’t think of it as ‘returning to the field,’” he said. “I just feel incredibly relieved and grateful that it can open. As an actor, my job is the same as before―to bring the creator’s vision to life and deliver enjoyment to the audience.”

‘The Ultimate Duo’ follows demoted detective Jae-hyeok as he seizes what might be his last shot: tracking down the real culprit behind a murder case entangled with two suspects. He heads to Seoul with rookie detective Jung-ho for a no-holds-barred investigation. The film wrapped in 2019 under the title ‘Chuljangsusa,’ but its release was indefinitely postponed after Bae’s DUI incident.

Discussing his role as veteran detective Seo Jae-hyeok, Bae said, “I’ve played unlucky, passed-over cops before, and we’ve seen that type a lot. He can seem old-school, but his stubbornness gets cracked in a light way, which felt fresh. He’s easily swayed, so he doesn’t cling to his own bias―and that actually leads to results. That was interesting to me.”

‘The Ultimate Duo’ opens April 2.
