Musical theater actor Kim Jun-young, 35, is stepping away from all of his current productions after online allegations surfaced that he visited an adult nightlife venue. His agency initially denied any illegal conduct―but reversed course within hours.
In a second late-night statement on Nov. 3, HJ Culture apologized to audiences and industry colleagues, confirming, “Kim Jun-young will withdraw from every production he is currently appearing in.” The move marked a sharp pivot from the company’s first notice earlier in the day, which asserted there had been “no illegal behavior” and hinted at strong legal action.
The agency said it needed time to coordinate with multiple producers given Kim’s busy schedule, adding, “We apologize for the delay in issuing a final decision.” It also acknowledged its early communication fell short, saying the initial notice disappointed those who had supported the actor.
Producers of the play "Amadeus" likewise announced his departure, citing “personal reasons.” He is also expected to exit the musicals "Rachmaninoff" and "Ludwig: Beethoven the Piano."
The latest controversy picked up steam after a community post claimed a restaurant receipt photo from one of Kim’s visits had been deleted; some users pointed to specific wording on the receipt as fueling speculation about a nightlife venue.
The incident has revived criticism from 2020, when Kim drew backlash for clubbing while social-distancing rules were in effect―at the time, he issued a handwritten apology, saying he had failed to meet his responsibilities to the stage―further amplifying fans’ disappointment.
HJ Culture said details on performance cancellations and refunds will be announced later, offering another apology to ticket buyers.
