Baek Sung-moon, a well-known attorney and TV legal analyst who brought plainspoken legal insight to JTBC’s “Crime Chief” and MBN’s “News Fighter,” as well as to popular YouTube channels, died early Friday after a two-year cancer battle. He was 52.
According to representatives, Baek passed away around 2 a.m. at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. He stepped back from broadcasting in 2023 to focus on treatment following his diagnosis.
His wife, YTN anchor Kim Sun-young―whom he married in 2019―was by his side throughout his illness, providing devoted care, according to those close to the family.
Marking his 52nd birthday in July, Baek shared a photo with his wife on social media and reflected on his health journey: “The person who keeps me going. There were moments when I feared I wouldn’t make it to this birthday, but I’m hanging in there. To my precious wife―I’m so sorry, so grateful, so happy, and I love you.”
His final post was a love letter to his longtime team, the LG Twins. In July, while still in treatment, he shared a photo of a 2016 jersey gifted by former Twins pitcher and commentator Lee Dong-hyun, writing, “A uniform from my hero and amazing junior, Lee Dong-hyun. I’m determined to be back at the ballpark with my wife soon… Thank you so much. I won’t just endure this―I’ll win.” News of his passing arrives as the LG Twins compete in the Korean Series, deepening the sorrow among friends and fans.
A Seoul native, Baek graduated from Kyunggi High School and Korea University’s law program, passed the national bar in 2007 and began practicing in 2010. A memorial has been set at Seoul Asan Medical Center Funeral Hall, Room 35. The funeral will be held Nov. 2 at 7 a.m., with interment at Yongin Park Cemetery.
