Singer and visual artist Kwon Ji-an, better known as Solbi, follows her invitational solo in Porto, Portugal, with her first invitational exhibition in Daegu, South Korea.
Starting today (Oct. 14) through Nov. 22, Solbi presents 'Rhythm of Language' at Cheongmundang, a community-focused cultural complex in the Buk-gu district of Daegu.
Staged at the official invitation of the Happy Buk-gu Cultural Foundation, the show marks Kwon’s first solo outing in Daegu. Cheongmundang champions emerging artists and local businesses in an open, neighborhood-minded space―an ethos Kwon says aligned with her and made the invite an easy yes.
About 18 works are on view, including her signature Humming Letter series, the Apple series, and brand-new pieces created for 2025.
With this exhibition, Kwon continues to push the idea of turning a “language of optimism” into art. Humming Letter translates emotions too big for words into visual rhythm. The Apple series―sparked by a snide online comment, “Can you even draw an apple?”―has evolved into a meditation on digital-age verbal abuse, the possibility of healing, and the power of art to restore our relationship with language.
The show expands into an interactive, AI-driven experience. On the second floor, Today’s Mood pairs Kwon’s work with nature-inspired soundscapes generated by the AI music tool SUNU. On the third floor, My Humming Drawing invites visitors to record their own hums and watch the sound convert into images in real time. A collaboration with emerging local artist Hwang Ju-seung adds another layer for visitors to discover.
“This invitational reflects on the power―and the underside―of language, delivering messages of healing and reconciliation through art,” said Park Jeong-sook, CEO of the Happy Buk-gu Cultural Foundation. “We hope Daegu residents feel that resonance and a moment of restoration through Kwon’s work.”
Kwon recently drew international attention with an invitational solo in Porto. The Daegu presentation at Cheongmundang continues that momentum, bridging audiences at home and abroad.
Rhythm of Language runs Oct. 14-Nov. 22. The opening reception is set for Oct. 21 and will feature an artist talk with Kwon.
