Yoo Yeon-seok and Kim Hae-sook light up ‘No Other Choice’ with scene-stealing cameos, honoring their long-running ties with filmmaker Park Chan-wook.
‘No Other Choice’ follows Man-su (Lee Byung-hun), a company man who thinks he’s made it―until he’s suddenly laid off. Determined to protect his wife, two kids, and the hard-won home they live in, he gears up for a personal war to get back on his feet.
Yoo Yeon-seok, who left a lasting impression 22 years ago as the teenage Lee Woo-jin in Park’s ‘Oldboy,’ reunites with the director as Oh Jin-ho, a dentist at the clinic where Miri (Son Ye-jin) works. His presence needles Man-su’s jealousy, adding a jolt of tension and sly humor to the story.
Kim Hae-sook pops up as the rooftop landlady who strikes up a conversation with Man-su just as he clutches a potted chili plant and steels himself for a big decision―an arresting moment that grabs the audience’s attention. The veteran star previously worked with Park as the overprotective Mrs. Ra in ‘Thirst’ and as housekeeper Mrs. Sasaki in ‘The Handmaiden.’
Though their screen time is brief, both actors make a big impact. Their loyalty-fueled cameos deepen the texture of the film and keep the momentum humming.
‘No Other Choice’ opened Sept. 24 and has drawn 2.64 million moviegoers nationwide to date.
