Actor Choi Woo-shik says he pulled off "Would You Marry Me" with a little help from his friends.
Speaking at an SBS press conference on Oct. 10 at the network’s Mok-dong headquarters in Seoul, the star broke down how his new rom-com role departs from his past work.
“The big difference this time is I’m not as jokey,” he said. “I’m shy to call it ‘chic,’ but I tried leaning into what I thought looked cool. It’s also the wealthiest character I’ve played. I’m usually running or being chased; this guy drives a nice car and actually sleeps in beautiful places. It felt fresh, and I really tried to deliver those cool TV moments.”
"Would You Marry Me" follows two strangers who enter a 90-day fake newlywed arrangement to hang on to a luxury newlywed home prize. Expect sugar-sweet, high-stakes romance as their pretend marriage starts to feel all too real. The series is directed by Song Hyun-wook with Hwang In-hyeok, and written by Lee Hana.
Choi plays Kim Woo-joo, the only son and fourth-generation heir to Korea’s first bakery, Myungsoondang ― basically a pastry chaebol. Jung So-min stars as Yoo Me-ri, the head of Me-ri Design, a bride-to-be who gets hit with a broken engagement and a newlywed-home rental scam all at once.
Known for swoony turns in "Our Beloved Summer" and the film "Melo Movie," Choi stayed humble: “Honestly, I don’t have a ton of straight-up rom-com experience. I’ve joked about being a ‘rom-com prince,’ but I’ve got a lot to learn.”
“I leaned on Jung So-min, who’s basically optimized for rom-coms, and on our directors,” he added. “The best thing I did on this project was ask for help. Everyone really looked out for me, and I’m grateful.”
As for why he signed on: “I loved 'Another Miss Oh 'and wanted to work with the director. And I had a feeling the set would be fun with this cast.” He said filming felt “like going to a playground,” adding, “We shot in gorgeous locations with perfect weather. I think you’ll love it.”
"Would You Marry Me", showcasing Choi and Jung’s chemistry, premieres tonight (Oct. 10) at 9:50 p.m. KST on SBS.
