Park Chan-wook shared his excitement about unveiling his new film “No Other Choice” as the opening title of the Busan International Film Festival.
Speaking at a press conference for BIFF’s 30th edition opener “No Other Choice,” held this afternoon at the Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae, the filmmaker said, “People know I’ve been nurturing this project for a very long time. To finally present it at home is incredibly moving. It’s my first time opening Busan, and on the festival’s 30th anniversary, no less. I’m thrilled―and a little nervous―to see how audiences respond at the ceremony.”
Lee Byung-hun, who stars as Man-su, added with a smile, “I don’t think I’ve ever anticipated a film this much after wrapping. It’s also my first time headlining an opening-night selection, which makes it even more exciting.”
Son Ye-jin, who plays Mi-ri, said, “It’s an honor and a joy to have our movie open BIFF. Tonight will be my first time watching it with a general audience, and I’m excited to see their reactions. I don’t think I’ll ever forget today.”
Park Hee-soon, who portrays Seon-chul, drew laughs saying, “In this beautiful city, with this beautiful film, all I do on screen is act drunk. I guess there’s just… no other choice.”
“No Other Choice” follows Man-su (Lee Byung-hun), an office worker who feels he’s finally “made it” until he’s suddenly laid off. Determined to protect his wife and two children―and the hard-won home they’ve just secured―he prepares for an all-out battle to get back on his feet.
After competing at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival to rave notices from overseas critics, “No Other Choice” has its first domestic bow as BIFF’s opening film.
The festival’s opening ceremony begins today (the 17th) at 6 p.m. at the Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae.
