Cha Tae-hyun celebrated Kim Jong-kook’s wedding news.
On the Sept. 14 episode of SBS’s "My Little Old Boy," Cha brought up his longtime friend Kim Jong-kook’s upcoming marriage.
In the episode, Cha headed out on a rare trip with Kim Jun-ho, Kim Jong-min and Yoon Shi-yoon. When Yoon briefly stepped away, the married-life talk kicked in.
“If I hadn’t gotten married, I would’ve gone bankrupt. Jong-min too―if he were still single, he’d have gone broke at least once already,” Cha joked, drawing knowing laughs.
He added that when he got married, “My wife looked at my bank account and was shocked―there was barely anything in there,” and Kim Jun-ho chimed in, “Same here. She was like, ‘You’ve been on TV for 30 years―how is this all you have?’”
“We know how to earn, not how to save,” Cha said, adding that handing over the household finances to his wife was the right move.
With talk turning to the many weddings happening in 2025, Cha recalled how he figured out Kim Jong-kook was tying the knot. “I was on my way to a shoot when our group chat blew up―‘Who’s awake?’ Then a video call came in asking when I was free. I got chills and went, ‘You’re getting married, aren’t you?’”
He stressed there were no hard feelings about being kept in the dark. “I wasn’t upset at all. I was just happy he was getting married. Watching him play the cheapskate on TV, I used to tell him, ‘If you’re really like that, you’ll never get married.’ When he said it was happening, I was so thrilled I didn’t even ask who the bride was.”
Kim Jong-min mentioned he received a refrigerator from Kim Jong-kook as a wedding gift, then asked Cha how much cash he planned to give. In Korea, guests often bring cash envelopes to weddings, and Cha revealed he still has the tally from his own big day. “Jong-kook was tied for fourth place―20 years ago,” he said, surprised at the memory.
“So I should probably pay fourth-place money too, right?” Kim Jong-min teased. Cha shot back, “I’m going to sit there and count the envelopes that day. I’ll see what fourth place gave and match it,” cracking everyone up.
