Singer Jang Yoon-jeong pushed back after a TV comment that framed her husband, former KBS anchor Do Kyung-wan, as the “sub” in their marriage. KBS presenter Kim Jin-woong, who made the remark, has apologized, calling his words careless.
On the April 24 episode of KBS2’s "Boss in the Mirror," anchor Um Ji-in noted that “one junior who married really well is Do Kyung-wan.” Kim replied, “This might sound disrespectful to a senior, but I couldn’t live as someone’s second fiddle.” When Um asked why Do would be considered a “second fiddle,” Kim doubled down that it would be difficult for him.
Soon after the episode aired, Jang wrote on Instagram, “We’re not even acquaintances. You can’t dress up words or actions that the other person can’t laugh off as a ‘joke.’ There is no such thing as a ‘sub’ in a family,” making her displeasure clear.
In a follow-up post, Jang shared that Kim had texted her a personal apology. “It must have taken courage to apologize, and for that alone I think I should accept it. I wish him happiness and good fortune ahead,” she wrote.
As the backlash grew, Kim posted on social media on Aug. 25: “I apologize to seniors Do Kyung-wan and Jang Yoon-jeong for the thoughtless comment I made on air. I’m also sorry to viewers and fans who felt uncomfortable.” He continued, “I’m still inexperienced and got ahead of myself, so I wasn’t careful. I ended up saying something I shouldn’t have.”
He added, “When I was working outside Seoul, Do Kyung-wan sunbae was always warm and encouraging. I’m deeply sorry to have caused trouble.” Kim said the incident taught him “how a careless remark can leave a deep wound,” pledging to be more mindful going forward.
Jang and Do married in June 2013 and share a son and a daughter. After 12 years at KBS, Do went freelance in 2021 and has since been active across TV shows and live events. Though Jang initially worried about the risks, the couple agreed on ground rules before his exit: he’d be prepared, not coast on her name, and take advice without bristling.
