'The Winning Try' Yoon Kye-sang has announced a successful return to the small screen.
The new SBS Friday-Saturday drama 'The Winning Try' kicked off to a great start with its broadcasts on the 25th and 26th, heating up the summer nights as Yoon Kye-sang returned to viewers after a year. Transforming into the quirky coach Joo Ga-ram of the perennially last-place Hanyang High School rugby team, he delivered a miraculous performance filled with laughter and emotion.
At the 'The Winning Try' press conference, director Jang Young-seok mentioned, "When I read the script, I could easily picture Yoon Kye-sang," showing strong faith in him and heightening curiosity about the character Joo Ga-ram that he would portray.
The curiosity about Yoon Kye-sang's unique transformation turned into admiration in episodes 1 and 2 of 'The Winning Try'. Not only did he perfectly embody the unpredictable character of a rugby ball, but he also delivered an 'MVP-level' performance that stirred the screen.
Joo Ga-ram's (played by Yoon Kye-sang) struggle at Hanyang High School captivated viewers as it oscillated between humor and poignancy. Stepping in as the new coach of the rugby team facing disbandment, he was met with a thorny path. Once a star player dominating the Korean rugby scene, he had fallen to a troublemaker tarnished by doping allegations, and no one welcomed his appointment.
Despite ongoing hostility from the team members and even a proposal for his dismissal, Joo Ga-ram was undeterred. Instead, he equipped himself with a subtle madness, breaking through the situation with his unique and lively approach.
Especially, Joo Ga-ram's refreshing counterattack, like a breath of fresh air, was immensely satisfying. The rugby team members, banned from training, not only prepared a victory ritual on their own but also faced the humiliation of not being able to place a rugby ball on the ritual table. In response, Joo Ga-ram stuck a rugby ball into a cake placed on the table, launching a dopamine-inducing counterstrike.
Moreover, the genuine care Joo Ga-ram showed for his students added a touching dimension. He sought out Yoon Sung-jun (played by Kim Yohan), who had defied him and left the training ground, to share a heartfelt promise filled with sincerity. He also allowed the players to experience the true thrill of challenge and the exhilarating joy that follows, transforming them into a 'one team'. This evolution touched many viewers, raising expectations for the story to unfold.
Yoon Kye-sang's deep and broad acting prowess was a powerful force in 'The Winning Try'. His natural comedic acting, maximizing his unique sense of humor, significantly influenced the delightful atmosphere of the show and showcased the characteristics of the characters at a glance. Furthermore, his emotional performance, conveyed through his eyes and expressions, heightened the immersion.
Yoon Kye-sang has completely 'tried' and won over the hearts of viewers in just the first week of broadcasting. The spotlight is on him as he continues to showcase his undeniable presence as an actor in future episodes.
'The Winning Try', starring Yoon Kye-sang, airs every Friday and Saturday night at 9:50 PM.
