Actor Yoon Kye-sang shared his feelings about returning to comedy after a long hiatus.
On the afternoon of the 25th, at the SBS building in Mok-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, during the press conference for SBS's new Friday-Saturday drama 'The Winning Try' (written by Lim Jin-ah, directed by Jang Young-seok, Yoon expressed, "It was fun to return to comedy after such a long time, but I felt a bit of pressure."
'The Winning Try' is a comedic sports drama about an unpredictable, eccentric director, Joo Ga-ram, and the perennially last-place Hanyang High School rugby team racing towards victory at the national sports festival. The drama is a collaboration between director Jang Young-seok, who co-directed 'Taxi Driver 2', and writer Lim Jin-ah, whose script won the grand prize at the SBS Cultural Foundation's script contest.
Yoon plays the character Joo Ga-ram, a rugby idol at the peak of his popularity who retires due to a doping scandal and disappears, only to return as the coach of his alma mater's rugby team three years later.
Yoon mentioned, "Joo Ga-ram plays a crucial role in 'The Winning Try'. He leads the storyline and the rugby team's growth process, so I really pondered on how to keep it engaging. My goal in acting is to strive for authenticity. When I faced this role, I thought instead of bringing in a different persona, 'Why not amplify the humorous side within me?' That probably made it more natural."
Thus, the quirky and comedic Joo Ga-ram, as portrayed by Yoon, was born. Yoon said, "If you liked the Yoon Kye-sang who used to be on variety shows, you'll probably enjoy this. I incorporated a lot of the teasing and comedic elements from back then. I tried hard to make it not seem forced. Watch the drama and see for yourself. I did my best."
He added, "It might seem like a bit of a cheat to bring my real personality into the role, but I went for it this time. 'Let's fully utilize the cheerful Yoon Kye-sang.' The director allowed for a lot of ad-libs, and I incorporated many playful moments on the spot."
Yoon Kye-sang's comedic performance is highly anticipated in 'The Winning Try', which will follow 'Our Movie' and premiere on the 25th at 9:50 PM.
