SBS's new Friday-Saturday drama 'The Winning Try' boasts a lineup of seasoned actors including Gil Hae-yeon, Kim Min-sang, Jang Hyuk-jin, Lee Sung-wook, and Jeong Soon-won.
Scheduled to premiere on the 25th, 'The Winning Try' (written by Lim Jin-ah, directed by Jang Young-seok) is a comedic sports drama that follows the unpredictable journey of a quirky director, Joo Ga-ram, and the perennially last-place Han-yang High School rugby team as they sprint towards national championship glory. The drama sees director Jang Young-seok, who co-directed Taxi Driver 2', teaming up with Lim Jin-ah, whose script won the top prize at the SBS Cultural Foundation's script contest. The cast, including Yoon Kye-sang (as Joo Ga-ram), Lim Se-mi (as Bae Yi-ji), and Kim Yohan (as Yoon Sung-jun), is garnering attention for their solid acting skills and vibrant energy.
Joining them, Gil Hae-yeon (as Kang Jeong-hyo), Kim Min-sang (as Seong Jong-man), Jang Hyuk-jin (as Na Gyu-won), Lee Sung-wook (as Jeon Nak-gyun), and Jeong Soon-won (as Bang Heung-nam) are set to enrich 'The Winning Try' with their reliable performances. Their dynamic roles in the growth of Han-yang High School's rugby team promise to deliver an engaging mix of thrills and laughter.
Among them, the intense dynamics between the rugby team, led by school principal Gil Hae-yeon, and the 'closure advocacy quartet' of Kim Min-sang, Jang Hyuk-jin, Lee Sung-wook, and Jeong Soon-won, are particularly anticipated to heighten interest.
Gil Hae-yeon returns as the steadfast ally of Han-yang High School's rugby team, principal Kang Jeong-hyo. In the drama, she is the one who brings Yoon Kye-sang (as Joo Ga-ram), who had fled from rugby, back as the new coach of the rugby team. Her role as a motherly figure to Yoon Kye-sang promises to be a key support for the underdog rugby team, raising expectations for the chemistry between the deeply experienced Gil Hae-yeon and Yoon Kye-sang.
Meanwhile, Kim Min-sang plays the ambitious vice principal Seong Jong-man, who is eyeing the principal's position. Portraying an opportunist who manipulates the school for his own advancement, he considers the bottom-ranked rugby team a thorn in his side. His confrontations with the new coach, Yoon Kye-sang, are set to add tension and depth to the drama.
Jang Hyuk-jin steps into the shoes of Na Gyu-won, the deputy superintendent and father of Han-yang High School's shooting team vice-captain Na Seol-hyun (played by Seong Ji-young), becoming Kim Min-sang's dark ally. His character, a symbol of power aiming for the superintendent position, showcases a ruthless ambition for his daughter's success, promising a compelling performance from Jang Hyuk-jin.
Lee Sung-wook portrays the cold-hearted shooting team coach Jeon Nak-gyun, who doesn't shy away from underhanded tactics for the sake of medals. His alliance with Kim Min-sang and Jang Hyuk-jin to advocate for the rugby team's closure adds an intriguing layer of conflict and ambition to the story.
Lastly, Jeong Soon-won plays Bang Heung-nam, Yoon Kye-sang's high school friend and the contract aerobic coach at Han-yang High School, who is caught between his aspirations and his loyalty to his past as a rugby player. His struggle between ideals and reality is set to captivate the audience.
Regarding this, the production team of 'The Winning Try' stated, "Following Yoon Kye-sang, Lim Se-mi, and Kim Yohan, the addition of Gil Hae-yeon, Kim Min-sang, Jang Hyuk-jin, Lee Sung-wook, and Jeong Soon-won elevates the narrative of Han-yang High School's rugby team. Their seasoned performances will breathe life into the drama, adding depth and excitement. We invite viewers to look forward to the dynamic synergy of comedy, passion, and energy they bring." This ramps up anticipation for the upcoming 'The Winning Try'.
Set to fill this summer with the fiery energy of youth, 'The Winning Try' will follow the currently airing 'Our Movie' and premiere on the 25th (Friday) at 9:50 PM.
