After 27 years of vibrant activity as part of the group SHINHWA, as well as a solo artist and producer, Lee Min-woo has launched his first solo exhibition titled 'Purism'.
Held from June 21st to July 20th at Space776 in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul, Lee Min-woo's inaugural solo exhibition 'Purism' offers a glimpse into the artist's inner world through the symbolic self-portrait of a 'Pierrot'. It candidly reveals the emotions and experiences behind his time on stage.
The opening ceremony on June 21st was celebrated by fellow artists and celebrities from various fields, including singer Solbi, Kim Chang-yeol, Junggigo, Jang Hye-jin, actor Lee Sang-yoon, and fashion designer Lee Sang-bong, marking Lee Min-woo's first step as an artist.
In this exhibition, Lee Min-woo boldly incorporates the 'Pierrot' to convey the hidden anxieties and loneliness behind the glamorous spotlight, along with a positive message of overcoming these feelings with humor.
The recurring motif of 'the Pierrot's nose' visually represents Lee Min-woo's emotions, serving not just as a prop but as a window reflecting the world and a mirror facing himself. Even if the world reflected in the nose appears distorted, Lee Min-woo embraces these distortions, conveying a message of positivity and courage in the face of life's challenges.
Lee Min-woo shared, "The Pierrot and I share a similar way of living," adding, "I am a Pierrot. What did you see beyond my laughter? Only after revealing the sincerity behind my smile through my art, was I truly able to smile."
The title 'Purism' signifies 'purity', and through this exhibition, Lee Min-woo aims to shed the roles and images he has accumulated over the years, confronting his most honest emotions to return to his true self. Moreover, as an artist choosing to live with a smile, his first step is expected to resonate quietly with the audience.
