The movie 'Hi-FIVE' has broken through the 1.5 million viewer mark nationwide just 17 days after its release.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network for movie tickets, 'Hi-FIVE' surpassed 1.5 million viewers by 7 a.m. on the 16th.
Released on May 30th, 'Hi-FIVE' quickly took the lead over its competitor 'Big Deal', which opened on the same day. It maintained the top spot at the box office for a week, signaling a successful start. However, it was dethroned by 'How to Train Your Dragon' released in June. In its second week, it consistently held the second position and reached the 1.5 million milestone in just three weeks.
'Hi-FIVE' is a comedic action adventure about five individuals who, after undergoing organ transplants, accidentally gain superpowers and encounter those who seek to exploit their abilities. Directed by Kang Hyeong-cheol, known for his blockbuster hits 'Speed Scandal' and 'Sunny', this is his first film in seven years and has garnered attention with a cast including Lee Jae-in, Ahn Jae-hong, Yoo Ah-in, Ra Mi-ran, Kim Hee-won, and Oh Jung-se.
The film, which finished shooting in 2021 and was preparing for a 2023 release, was delayed due to a drug scandal involving one of its leading actors, Yoo Ah-in. Despite this setback, 'Hi-FIVE' has performed well in its initial release, four years after its completion.
However, to break even (approximately 2.9 million viewers), the film needs to maintain its momentum. As 'Hi-FIVE' has just reached its halfway point, there's growing interest in whether it can achieve its break-even point through a long-term run.
