Canadian-born singer JK Kim Dong-wook (49, real name John Kim), known for expressing his political views—such as opposing the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol and publicly supporting presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo—has announced legal action against those who have posted malicious comments about him online.
On June 12, JK Kim Dong-wook shared a statement from his agency, Wepublic, via social media, stating, “We will be filing legal complaints against around ten individuals for defamation and reputation damage caused by abusive language and inappropriate remarks made online and on social media.”
He added, “We are currently collecting usernames and real names for further legal action based on requests from those around me. Just so you know, as many of you may have read in past cases—there will be no leniency.”
Previously, JK Kim Dong-wook had made several posts strongly opposing the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. Since the inauguration of the Lee Jae-myung administration on June 3 following the 21st presidential election, he has continued to share posts sharply criticizing the new government.
Among his posts were statements like, “South Korea’s national dignity has dropped because President Lee Jae-myung’s call with former U.S. President Donald Trump was delayed,” and “It’s uncertain whether President Lee will attend the G7 summit.” These criticisms have put him at the center of growing controversy.
In response, a civic group leader has announced plans to take legal action against JK Kim Dong-wook, citing his foreign nationality.
Shin Seung-mok, head of the Anti-Corruption Civic Action Group, publicly stated via his social media, “JK Kim Dong-wook maliciously spread false information about President Lee and the presidential office as if they were factual, with intent to defame. This violates the Information and Communications Network Act.”
