The creators behind 'Whenever Possible,' PD Choi Bo-pil and writer Chae Jin-ah, have expressed their deep trust in MCs Yoo Jae-suk and Yoo Yeon-seok.
The SBS television show 'Whenever Possible' is a unique concept that brings fortune into the fleeting moments of everyday life. Since its debut last spring and fall, it has consistently topped the ratings in its time slot, both in the metropolitan area and among viewers aged 20-49, securing its position as the leading Tuesday night entertainment show. Notably, the final episode of the previous season reached a new high with a 4.4% viewership rating in the metropolitan area, raising anticipation for the upcoming season (according to Nielsen Korea).
Ahead of the Season 3 premiere on May 6th at 9 PM, the team behind 'Whenever Possible' has released an interview with the trusted production duo, PD Choi Bo-pil and writer Chae Jin-ah, who have been creating magic together since Season 1.
PD Choi, known for his strong fanbase and trust among viewers, credits the success of 'Whenever Possible' up to Season 3 to the dynamic duo of MCs Yoo Jae-suk and Yoo Yeon-seok. "The idea for 'Whenever Possible' started with 'What if something fun happened during those precious spare moments?' The biggest factor in reaching Season 3 has been our two MCs. Their ability to blend naturally with anyone has been our greatest strength," he expressed his gratitude.
He added, "The authenticity of the program is another secret to its longevity. We minimize production interference on set, allowing the cast to take the lead. This, coupled with a meticulously planned structure, ensures fresh and engaging content in any spontaneous situation. The role of the 'gap owners' (applicants) who share their real spare moments has also been significant."
Previously, 'Whenever Possible' introduced a bonus coupon system in Season 2, where the 'gap owner' could join the game, receiving much praise. PD Choi mentioned, "For Season 3, we focused on maintaining the original charm and fun elements rather than making significant changes. However, we did tweak the bonus coupons to enhance the fun. This season, the 'gap friend' (guest) draws a coupon right before starting a mission, adding an element of suspense and making the outcomes even more entertaining."
The production team also shared insights into the game selection process for 'Whenever Possible.' PD Choi explained, "After extensive interviews to understand the 'gap friend's' personality, we design missions considering what they can comfortably do or excel at. Our previous 'gap friends' have said they couldn't help but get immersed. We focus on what would be entertaining for viewers when fully engaged, leading to a variety of games." Writer Chae Jin-ah added, "We select neighborhoods that match the 'gap friend.' We study where they were born, their favorite spots, and more. Having a 'gap friend' who knows the neighborhood well enriches the day's journey."
A key element of 'Whenever Possible' is the unpredictable fun brought by the 'gap owner.' Writer Chae explained, "We meet the 'gap owner' of the designated neighborhood and engage in deep conversations to understand their daily life and what would make them happy. Our writers communicate closely with them until the day of filming." She shared, "When they say that today's 'gap' will make them happy for years to come, it's a truly gratifying and happy moment."
PD Choi emphasized focusing on the natural charm of the 'gap owners.' "Some overflow with energy, while others have a quiet charm. We assure them during meetings that we're not just looking for people with great speaking skills. And often, they perform even better on-site, thanks to our MCs who excel at drawing out stories."
Above all, PD Choi and writer Chae expressed special affection for MCs Yoo Jae-suk and Yoo Yeon-seok, who have been pivotal to 'Whenever Possible.' PD Choi remarked, "'Whenever Possible' thrives on the relationship and non-intrusive approach of the MCs. Yoo Yeon-seok adds synergy with his playful charm, while Yoo Jae-suk creates a welcoming environment for everyone to blend in seamlessly." He noted Yoo Yeon-seok's natural transition back into the MC role this season, highlighting their chemistry.
Writer Chae affectionately referred to the duo as 'Big Yoo' and 'Little Yoo,' praising their brotherly chemistry and supportive dynamic.
PD Choi, who has worked with Yoo Jae-suk on 'Running Man,' highlighted his invaluable contribution to 'Whenever Possible.' "While Yoo Jae-suk shone as a player on 'Running Man,' on 'Whenever Possible,' he feels more like part of the production team, intuitively addressing any concerns. This trust allows us to pursue a more authentic reality, with Yoo Jae-suk embracing a role that encompasses the entire show," he admired. Writer Chae also expressed gratitude for Yoo Jae-suk's role in harmonizing the set, from Yoo Yeon-seok to the staff.
In conclusion, PD Choi shared his excitement for Season 3 of 'Whenever Possible,' urging viewers to enjoy the show without reservations and to not hesitate in applying to share their own 'gap' moments. Writer Chae encouraged viewers to tune in, promising a comforting and enjoyable experience anytime, now airing an hour earlier at 9 PM.
Promising an even stronger connection to everyday laughter, the healing Tuesday entertainment 'Whenever Possible' is set to premiere on May 6th, Tuesday, at 9 PM.
