On May 18, 1980, a democratization movement started in Gwangju to protest against the martial law government.

Over six hundred citizens of Gwangju have died during this movement, and J-HOPE constantly expressed his respect and pride for his city and its history.

In one of BTS' songs 'Ma City', J-HOPE sings, "I'm a Jeollanam-do Gwangju baby. If you want to see me, gather around at 7 and dial 062-518."
